The Lepa professional exhibition that ended in Kanta-Häme on Saturday featured edible sweet potatoes. Although the Decoration sweet potato has been in the Finnish market for about five years now, the cultivation of sweet potatoes was initiated here by Reeta Rouhiainen who brought it from the Spring Gardens in the Netherlands. Sweet potato grows so strongly that sometimes the pot in which it is planted cracks. But, this summer, the average size of the newly-introduced plants was small. “Partly, the reason behind the small size is a lack of knowledge about the cultivation process,” said the initiator, adding that the plant does not even have a Finnish name. This root vegetable that grows by climbing has already found a product manager and is expected to hit the market next spring. An experimental cultivation is going on now at the Koroinen Garden in Turku. More News
