A significant number of school children are victims of sexual abuse and violence, with girls comprising the majority, according to the preliminary results of a survey conducted by the Police University College.
The survey found one-third of the ninth-grade school girls have at one point experienced sexual harassment or violence.
The figure, however, is slightly less for boys of the same age as almost one-fourth of the surveyed boys have experienced sexual harassment or violence.
Sexual harassments directed towards girls take place mostly on the internet while in case of boys these happen mostly while undertaking recreational activities.
File Photo – Lehtikuva. More than six per cent of the girls have experienced abuse from adults while in case of boys the figure stands at less than two per cent.
Less than four per cent of the girls and about one per cent of the boys revealed to have experienced violence or harassment from their peers.
About one in three of the victims abused by adults had been intoxicated.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior on Wednesday launched the project Right to Choose, an initiative directed against sexual harassment and violence.
The project is intended for girls and women aged 15-25 and its purpose is to help to identify and respond to cases of sexual harassment and violence.
