A Russian state aircraft is suspected of trespassing into the Finnish airspace on Saturday evening, said defence ministry sources.
The sources said the suspected airspace violation took place at about 7:00pm in Hankoniemi area.
The director of communication at the defence ministry, Max Arhippainen, however, did not make any comment on whether Finnish machines went to identify the Russian aircraft.
He also did not comment on what kind of machine was suspected of trespassing into the Finnish airspace.
The Border Guard is investigating the matter but did not disclose any detail to the news agency STT on Saturday night.
In May, two Russian aircraft violated the Finnish airspace, which saw criticism against the then Jyrki Katainen’s government for issuing misleading information in this regard.
Arhippainen that time said a few similar trespasses take place every year.
