According to the YLE report, Katainen will become the so called super-commissioner in charge of growth and employment area. The appointment will probably be announced in the middle of next week.
Katainen’s cabinet did not confirm the information to news agency STT, pointing out that the matter is still inconclusive.
Negotiations will be held with the incoming EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker this week.
Currently, Katainen serves as the European Commission vice president responsible for Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Euro. There is an attempt to reduce the number of vice presidents and increase their importance.
The rise of Katainen to the position of vice chairman was anticipated.
