FTimes-STT Report, Sept 2

Two well known cancer doctors have been accused of violating the Medical Research Act.

According to the prosecution, one of the doctors conducted a clinical research on patients between 2007 and 2012 without the permission required. The second doctor is accused of assisting the first.

The research was conducted in a private cancer clinic. The procedure involved use of oncolytic viruses given to patients to destroy cancer cells.

The prosecution believes in addition to being a part of treatment, the purpose of the research was to come up with scientific knowledge.

The prosecution has demanded that the doctors should be fined. The doctors deny the charges.

They maintain that this was a case of trial treatment and not clinical research.

The prosecution, on the other hand, maintains that the provision of treatment does not alter the fact as the results of the treatment were analysed and later published in a medical journal.
