Sat, 13 Sep, 2014 12:06:56 AM FTimes-STT Report, Sept 13 Photo – Lehtikuva. Finnish drivers are using tyres in good condition as was anticipated.
Inspections carried out in the beginning of the week found fewer tyres in bad condition than a year ago.
So far 2,400 vehicles have been inspected with 12.5 per cent of them classified as un-roadworthy while the corresponding figure last spring was 14.7 per cent.
Un-roadworthy tyres are classified as those that have a tread depth of 2 millimetres or less.
Slick tyres increase the braking distance as well as making aquaplaning easier.
“More people seem to take care of tyres despite the difficult economic times,” said Risto Keskiruokanen, head of the tyre inspection campaign.
The inspection was still underway on Friday and the aim is to check 12,000 cars. The campaign is coordinated by tyre specialists, Autonrengasliitto ry, road safety and the police.
