Finland has granted 11.45 million euros in general support for the activities of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), said an official press release.

“Finland’s additional support is a strong show of confidence in the UN Population Fund and its work as a promoter of sexual and reproductive health and rights,” the release quoted Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto as saying.

UNFPA supports its member countries in their efforts in the sector of population policy and reproductive health and promotes gender equality and the position of women.

In practice, the organisation supports, among other things, the availability of contraceptives, measures to end genital mutilation and efforts to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Last year, Finland was UNFPA’s fourth largest donor. The total support granted by Finland this year will rise to 45 million euros, and Finland will be one of UNFPA’s top three financiers, according to the release.
