The Vihreä Liito (Green League) on Saturday endorsed the decision of the party chief of quitting the five-party alliance government.

The parliamentary group and the delegations of the party at a joint meeting held in Seinäjoki decided unanimously to resign from the government.

The Vihreä Liito on Thursday announced to resign from the ruling alliance following the government’s decision to approve the Fennovoima nuclear power plant in Pyhäjoki.

Soon after the Finnish government had approved the Russian-built Fennovoima nuclear plant, Vihreä chair and Environment Minister Ville Niinistö announced that his party would quit the government.

In addition to Niinistö, Pekka Haavisto, who served as the minister for international development, will also leave the government.

The party leaders said it is stipulated in the current government programme that no permit for new nuclear power plants should be granted.

The party had remained with the previous government despite the issuance of TVO’s nuclear permits.

Although the Greens did not support the move, staying with the ruling alliance put negative impacts on its supporters. The party suffered the consequences in the 2011 parliamentary elections with the number of its MPs sliding by five.
