Parliament will receive a citizen’s initiative bill which proposes tougher penalties for sexual offence against children.

The initiative has already garnered more than 50,000 signatures.

The bill proposes a two-year imprisonment as the minimum penalty for aggravated sexual abuse of a child. In such a case, the sentence given in practice would always be absolute.

In addition, the bill proposes that the minimum penalty for certain sexual offences be raised to four months’ imprisonment.

The initiative had by early Thursday evening received more than 49,800 signatures via the citizens’ initiative website kansalaisaloite.fi.

The bill had also received support from more than 200 people through other means. The initiative has still up to November 6 to collect more signatures.
