Ftimes - STT Report, Oct. 17

A diplomat who was allegedly behind the smuggling of a six-year-old boy named Anton from Russia to Finland was on Thursday fined by the Vantaa District Court, reported the Finnish language tabloid Iltalehti.

Anton and his father were smuggled out of Russia in a car’s trunk in 2009. The mother had secretly taken Anton to Russia without his father’s knowledge.

The court handed the diplomat a 60-day fine equivalent to around 4,000 euros. The penalty was demanded by the boy’s mother.

According to the court, the diplomat neglected his duty in resolving the matter.

The court also stated that the diplomat should not have acted with impartiality in the matter between the boy’s parents. Both the mother and the father of Anton are Finnish citizens.

The diplomat denied the charge and pleaded neutrality in the matter.
