The population of the country stood at 5,468,609 at the end of September as the population increased by 17,340 persons over the January to September period. The increase is 2,250 less than in the respective period of the previous year.
 
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad as the number of immigrants was 12,330 higher than that of emigrants while natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 5,010 persons.
 
According to the preliminary statistics for January to September period, 23,500 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 11,170 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,100 lower and the number of emigrants 300 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 6,340 of the immigrants and 7,670 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
 
During the January to September period, 43,820 children were born, which is 570 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths increased by 280 from the year before and amounted to 38,820.
 
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 208,590 by the end of September. Compared with the previous January to September period, the decrease was 1,630 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.
 
According to preliminary data by region, in January to September the population grew in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Varsinais-Suomi, Ostrobothnia, Åland, Pohjois-Savo, Central Ostrobothnia, Central Finland and Kanta-Häme.
 
In the January to September period, the population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it went up by 14,660 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 2 380 persons.
 
During January to September, migration between regions numbered 101,000. The highest gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Pohjois-Savo, Varsinais-Suomi and Åland.
 
In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 3,860 persons and Pirkanmaa, 1,230 persons. Also the relative migration gain was highest in Uusimaa and in Pirkanmaa, both gaining 2.4 per million of the population.
 
Migration loss from migration between regions was largest in absolute numbers in Lapland, 840 persons and in relative terms in Kainuu, 6.9 per million.
