A stronger male perspective on the issue of gender equality than in the past should be adopted, recommended a working group pondering men’s equality.

In its final report handed over to Health and Social Services Minister Susanna Huovinen on Wednesday, the working group suggested that fathers should be given equal opportunities as mothers in reconciling work and family life.

“Somehow the starting point is that often the mother is always with the child. For example, in the child health clinic, there is not necessarily a chair for the father,” remarked Kari Välimäki, chair of the working group.

The working group said men’s need must be taken better into account in social and health services. According to the group, learning outcomes of boys in early childhood education have to be improved, too.

The working group was appointed by former culture and sports minister Paavo Arhinmäki who was in charge of issues related to gender.

According to Välimäki, trade union movements and gender organisations have pointed out that gender equality should also be considered from the men’s point of view.

Välimäki said the objective of the report is that legislation on gender equality should take into account a stronger equality on gender issues, because currently it particularly applies to women.

“There is still a lot to do in improving the status of women in working life but also that of men in family life, so that paternity could be properly realised,” said Välimäki.
