Winter feeding of birds can be started gradually, according to Birdlife Finland.

A lucky feeder can get a visit form a rare Eurasian nuthatch.

According to the organisation, the migratory species has been spotted more than 200 times in different parts of the country.

Winter feeding should only start when the ground is frozen or covered with snow.

Once the feeding has started, it should continue until the ground has again started to melt.

Generally, birds feed on all kinds of food, if they are not spoiled or too salty. The safest foods for birds are peanuts, sunflower seeds, oats and suet. Field mustard, millet and flax can also be tried.
