The Ministry of Interior wants to have more power to fight terrorism threats.

The ministry plans to explore whether the police in the future will be able to make house searches and confiscation more easily.

The ministry is also exploring the possibility of imposing entry bans on people who have travelled to crisis areas.

In addition, the ministry intends to present additional funding to the security police-Supo to facilitate sending of a liaison officer to Turkey. The role of the liaison officer would be to analyse the activities of people travelling to conflict areas from Finland and those returning from such areas.

According to Interior Minister Päivi Räsänen, there are several hundred people who are suspected of having links to terrorist groups. Among these people, several dozen have left for the battle zones.

However, Räsänen said there is no information about the country being faced by isolated terrorist threats.

According to the minister, the situation in Finland is evaluated as part of the wider situation in European Union and Nordic countries.

“The same change has happened in the Western world in general. People need not to worry that an attack would be targeted towards Finland or Finns but the terrorism risk should be taken seriously,” observed the minister.
