Parliament has rejected a citizen-led initiative proposing amendments to the existing Copyright Act.

On Friday, 147 members of parliament voted against the bill while 27 votes were cast in favour. Twenty-seven lawmakers were absent during the voting.

Earlier, the Parliamentary Education and Culture Committee decided unanimously to turn down the bill as it contained too many contradictions and also due to some other technicalities.

According to national broadcaster YLE, the objective of the bill was to relax the legislation’s monitoring network and reduce penalties on copyright infringements. The Parliamentary Education and Culture Committee recommended that the Ministry of Education and Culture should consider amending copyright legislation due to the changing digital environment, said YLE.
