A defamation charge brought against Andy Hall, a Finnwatch researcher, was dismissed by a court in Bangkok, said Finnwatch in a release.

Andy Hall was accused of defamation by Natural Fruit Company Ltd, a pineapple export factory.

According to Finnwatch, Natural Fruit had launched multiple criminal and civil prosecutions against the researcher and activist in February 2013 for his contribution to a Finnwatch report published in 2013.

The report exposed grievous human rights violations at Natural Fruit’s pineapple juice production facilities.

The court dismissed the charge because of unlawful interrogation process under section 120 of the criminal procedure code.

“We are relieved and glad that justice has prevailed in this case,” said Finnwatch Executive Director Sonja Vartiala.

According to Finnwatch, the charge dismissed on Wednesday is the first of four cases filed against Andy Hall by Natural Fruit.

The second case, a US$10m civil defamation case, begins today (October 30) at the Nakhon Pathom Court.

The third case on computer crimes act and criminal defamation charges will proceed on November 17 at the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court. The date for a fourth US$4 million civil case has not yet been confirmed, said the release.
