FTimes-Xinhua Report, Oct 31

The Finnish Defence Forces had sold off the hulk of a World War II era decommissioned German-made tank online.

In an Internet bidding, the German Panzer IV attracted over 800 offers before the Tuesday closing, as the winning bid for it topped 213,000 euros (about 271,917 U.S. dollars).

Finland purchased it from Germany in the summer of 1944. Its last duty had been to serve as a training target.

World War II era German weaponry has survived on a large scale in Finland.

The commercial director of the Finnish Defence Forces, Lars-Christian Schauman, told Xinhua on Wednesday that the annual income from sales of deactivated equipment accounts for two to four million euros.

"Not all equipment is available for international buyers. The original transaction may have imposed limitations on selling," he noted.

Schauman said further auctions would be arranged. "Some of the material is kept for museums, but the rest is either scrapped or sold."
