The country’s population at the end of October stood at 5,470,437, according to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data.
 
Over the January to October period, Finland’s population increased by 19,170 persons, which is 2,530 persons less than the corresponding period of the year before.
 
The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad with the number of immigrants being 13,540 higher than that of emigrants.
 
Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 5,630 persons, the data show.
 
According to the statistics for the January to October period, 25,870 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 12,330 persons emigrated from Finland.
 
The number of immigrants was 1,570 lower and the number of emigrants 60 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
 
In all, 6,780 of the immigrants and 8,480 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
 
During the period, 48,600 children were born, which is 780 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013.
 
The number of deaths was 42,970, which is 120 higher than one year earlier, according to the statistics.
