Sociability and functionality play important roles in children’s use of internet, says a doctoral dissertation submitted to the University of Jyväskylä.

In the past, children played with dolls, played tag, but the situation has changed in modern times, where children go to the virtual world to dress an avatar character and play virtual games.

The researcher, Terhi Tuukkanen, in the dissertation pointed out the reasons for using internet, its effects on children of 10-15 years of age and their related activities.

According to the research findings, for children, their online environment is an important part of their life, but not the whole life.

According to children, the best online communities enjoy freedom, as they can do everything at wish without hesitation or fear.

The network is not tied to “real life” rules. Instead, they may, for example, can talk many things which they failed to do in real life.
