Different parties and authorities nowadays make notifications on child protection more easily, according to Markku Tervahauda, head of basic social security at the municipality of Kuopio.

According to Tervahauda, this is a good thing, because it makes prevention possible.

The question of child welfare resources and social workers’ haste has stirred a debate after recent incidents of killings in families.

In Kuopio, for instance, the social workers responsible for child welfare issues cater for an average of 60 clients.

According to Tervahauda, the funds received for child welfare protection goes to home assistance instead of social workers.

Still, Tervahauda points at increased number of clients who come to child welfare protection, stating that the cases are more demanding.

Most of the cases are results of parenting problems such as substance abuse, domestic violence or mental health problems, says Tervahauda.

According to Tervahauda, the issue concerns not only child protection but also clinics, school health services and mental health service.

Two small children were found dead in a Kuopio apartment on Saturday evening. The police suspect their mother for the murders.
