More than 50 people have left Finland for Syria to participate in the ongoing fight there and at least six of them have been killed, said Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo) Director Antti Pelttari.

Six to eight of the people who left Finland for Syria have died, said Pelttari talking in the Yle Ykkösaamu (Yle Saturday morning news programme.

Earlier, in September, a Finnish language newspaper reported that the number of casualties of Finnish people involved in Syria fighting might be five to six.

Some of the fighters had left to ISIS rows, Pelttari said, adding that some Finnish-origin people were also in the group.

According to Pelttari, Supo is currently keeping watch on about 300 people suspecting them of having linked to terrorism. A couple of years ago the number was less than 200.

Pelttarin, however, said that all of them are not suspected for terrorist attacks, but action is necessary against them, as they might be involved in conducting propaganda or recruitment.

Pelttari believes that international terrorism-related cases will be investigated intensively from now.

He, however, said that there is still no terrorist threat for Finland, but the authorities are concerned about the phenomenon.
