Talking to Yle at the president’s question-answer programme, Niinistö said Finland’s security is based on four legs: credible national defence force, partnership structure, Russia and international cooperation.
The president said Finland is also exploring the possibility of a more detailed participation in the army training in Iraq.
So far, Finland has participated in the operations against the extremist organisation ISIS only by providing humanitarian aid.
Finland may participate in similar operations in other places, for example in Afghanistan, said Niinistö.
He does not support Finland joining the NATO alliance now.
Niinistö believes it was easy for Finland to join the military alliance NATO 20 years ago, because Russia was then weak.
