According to the law, vehicles must be fit with winter tyres in the months of December, January and February.
Studded tyres may be used always, when conditions permit. They can be used between the beginning of November and the end of March or the Monday following Easter Monday. This is because, after this period, studded tyres wear off the road surface.
The tread groove of winter tyres must be at least three millimetres.
However, in difficult conditions, it is good to have a tread groove almost twice as large.
According to Finnish Transport Safety Agency-Trafi, normal winter tyres are best in snowy conditions, while studded tyres are best in icy conditions.
