Speaker Eero Heinäluoma believes many lawmakers will regret their failure to attend this year’s Winter War memorial service.

Only about 40 MPs or one-fifth of the lawmakers attended the memorial service in Kauhojoki on Sunday and Monday.

The event was on Monday marked by re-enacting parliament’s evacuation in Kauhojoki 75 years ago.

November-December marks 75 years since the start of the Winter War and when the parliament was moved from Helsinki, which was bombed by the Soviets, to Kauhajoki.

Heinäluoma said he believes many MPs will realise that they should have set aside other things and use this day for big questions.

According to Heinäluoma, the number of attendants was, however, larger than in recent years.

Monday marked the day parliament moved to Kauhojoki as the Winter War descended.

The first day of the war was commemorated at a school in Kauhojoki which was attended by MPs, about a thousand youths and war veterans.
