Defence Minister Carl Haglund said his remarks about deeper defence cooperation between Finland and Sweden were misinterpreted.

According to Haglund, what he meant in the interview with the Swedish language daily Hufvudstadsbladet is that, after the spring elections, an inquiry into deeper defence cooperation between the two countries should be considered.

However, his Swedish counterpart Peter Hultqvist in an interview with the Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat said he was not ready to speak about an inquiry into military alliance between the two countries.

In the interview, Haglund reflected on the possibility of the two countries forging a naval and air force alliance, pointing out that such alliance would make their defence very strong.

Haglund, however, reminded that he was speaking about the future and not about tomorrow.

Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) Chair Timo Soini, also chair of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, was also critical of Haglund’s remarks.

Soini said such an issue should first and foremost be discussed with the country’s foreign and security policy leadership.
