Minister for International Development and Foreign Trade Sirpa Paatero, who is also responsible for corporate governance, said on Saturday that the negotiations for new investor and partner for the nickel mining company Talvivaara have not gone far.

In an interview with the Yle in the Morning Breakfast programme, Paatero said the parent company is still looking for an investor.

There has been a speculation that the Russian company Norilsk Nickel would be the owner of Talvivaara in the future.

“I don’t know about where the investors, new companies or partners are coming from. There has been lots of speculations, which include Sweden, Saudi-Arabia, whatever they are talking about nowadays,” said the minister, adding that so far she knew there has not been any relevant subject in the negotiations.

Paatero reiterated the government’s stand that Talvivaara’s partner should have a strong expertise in the mining sector, because that would help the company to get back on its feet.
