President Sauli Niinistö is a very popular figure in the country, according to a poll commissioned by the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

His popularity has increased even further and, according to the latest poll, almost 80 per cent of Finns are either satisfied or very satisfied with the president.

Two years ago, the popularity of the president was less than 60 per cent.

According to the survey, only 3 per cent considered Niinistö to have done a poor job.

According to Jan Sundberg, a political science professor at the University of Helsinki, the president’s contribution in security policy, for instance, could be behind his popularity.

“One indication is that he went to negotiate with President Vladimir Putin, even though it is difficult to assess whether it had an effect on anything,” said Sundberg.

TNS Gallup conducted the telephone interviews with about a thousand people.
