Huge redundancies have been evaded in municipalities where the number of lay-off doubled this year when compared to the last year, according to a report by Local Government Employers-KT.

This year, 369 municipal workers were relieved from their jobs on economic grounds. Next year, the figure is estimated to rise to 425 persons as redundancies are estimated to take place in 32 municipal organisations.

“Municipalities adhere well to labour force even during difficult times,” said Markku Jalonen, director of labour force at KT.

Municipalities and joint municipal authorities laid off approximately 14,000 people this year. According to Jalonen, this number is less than what had been anticipated.

Municipalities managed to cut labour force costs by 400 million euros last year and next year they are prepared to make 500 million euros in savings in labour costs.

Jalonen hopes that the option of centralised wage settlement extension will be agreed before the parliamentary elections and not until middle of June.

The report is based on survey of 287 municipalities or joint municipal authorities and covered 87 percent of municipalities’ personnel.
