Environment Minister Sanni Grahn-Laasonen has suggested that the transition period for compliance with the waste water decree in sparsely populated areas should be extended to 2018.
According to the minister, approximately 120,000 properties are not compliant with the waste water decree. The current deadline is March 2016.
According to Grahn-Laasonen, it is not realistic to expect that the regulation will be in place by the current deadline.

Furthermore, Grahn-Laasonen wants legislation on the decree to be reviewed. The minister termed the current waste water decree unreasonable and contrary to common sense and said she will seek flexibility of the regulation.
According to her, properties located in the so-called dry lands could be exempted from the decree. These are properties which are not located by water bodies or in groundwater areas.
The waste water decree originally came in force in 2004. In some cases, construction of small water treatment plant is required.
