A suspected case of state border crime took place on Saturday at the Niirala border crossing point in Tohmajärvi.

The suspect, a man of around 60 years, was travelling from Finland to Russia.

The man having both Czech and Canadian nationality drove past the closed gates without passing through the border inspection.

He only stopped at the Russian inspection point where inspection was carried out and afterwards he was returned back to the country.

He was later apprehended at the Niirala border crossing point and was detained on suspicion of state border crime and traffic offence.

The North Karelia Border Guard is conduction preliminary investigation in relation to the incident.
