FTimes - STT Report, Jan. 04
Women now account for more than 23 per cent of the total prisoners, rising from only eight per cent in 1980 to 13 per cent in 1990 and 16 in 2000.
The jail sentences against women are fewer compared to men, as women are generally fined, if convicted, said the report. A total of 32 women had been sentenced to life-term imprisonment since 1995 in Finland.
In most of the cases, the punishments were awarded for killings, where the victims were either the boyfriend/husband or woman’s own child.
