Approximately 12,500 new recruits began military service on Monday, said the Defence Forces.

Due to centralisation of the operations of the Defence Forces, as part of the reforms currently being implemented, the places where military service can be performed has declined.

About 10,000 new recruits will begin military service with the Army units and about 250 conscripts will begin their military career with the Border Guard Service.

The rest of the recruits will be distributed between the Navy and the Air Force units.

Among the recruits are about 250 women who will begin voluntary military service.

Since the reforms have paved way for the abolition of garrisons, there are fewer places on offer where military services can be performed.

Despite the changes, the strength of the new arrivals is not significantly different from the previous year's figures.

The capacity of the accommodation in the barracks has been efficiently utilised and the number of trainers in the units have been increased.

The organisational changes brought about by the reforms will see eight Army, three Air Force and two naval brigade units receive conscripts this year.

The Defence Forces said over five hours of travel is often accorded time travel extension, which means the holiday time is not shortened.
