One in every three Finnish couples split expenditure exactly by half, found a survey commissioned by the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

Over one-third couples share expenditure in relation to the spouse’s income and slightly under one-third of them favours the habit of dividing expenditures by item. For example, if one pays the food bills, the other pays the rent.

Only three per cent couples leave the bills to be paid in full by the other party.

The most common practice among the partners is to have separate accounts. The system of having a joint account is most favoured by the couples of the age of 40s.

The survey was conducted by TNS Gallup and interviewed 1,004 people. Of those interviewed, 31 per cent said they live alone. The margin of error was +/-3.
