A male patient died in a fire at Huutoniemi psychiatric hospital in Vaasa on Tuesday.

The police said the victim born in the 1990s had lit the fire on purpose.

The patient is reported to have heaped different kinds of stuff on the floor and lit the fire.

The man lived alone in a room, and the fire did not harm other patients.

The fire destroyed another patient’s room, but did not spread across the building. The smoke from the fire, however, spread to other parts of the hospital.

The building was evacuated and the all the twenty patients were transferred to an adjacent building.

In another incident, two men died in fire which engulfed a detached house in Lappeenranta during the Epiphany holiday.

The police confirmed that a 53-year-old man perished in the fire. The identity of the second victim is yet to be ascertained.

The rescue service and police investigation revealed that the fire started from a detachable electric heater. The authorities stressed that electric heaters must not be covered.
