FTimes-STT Report, Jan 9

Deaths caused by fire had continued to rise last year, confirmed the Finnish National Rescue Association-SPEK.

A total of 87 people perished in fire last year, compared to 58 in 2013.

This year, 56 victims were men, 24 women while the genders of the rest of the victims remain unsolved.

The age of a third of the victims has been established at over 65 years. One of the victims was a child.

Over a third of all fire deaths happened in detached houses and less than a third of all fire incidents took place in apartment buildings.

“The Finnish society has to make effort to improve housing fire safety,” said Finnish National Rescue Association Director Matti Orrainen,

Orrainen observed that the measures taken so far have not achieved a significant reduction in the death counts.
