The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) has revealed that there are significant deposits of copper and zinc resources waiting to be discovered in the country’s bedrock.
GTK has evaluated copper and zinc resources in three important deposit types in Finnish bedrock to a depth of one kilometre, said a release from GTK.
GTK has assessed the undiscovered metal resources in Finnish bedrock since 2008.
The evaluation includes volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS), porphyry copper, and Outokumpu types of mineral deposits.
Altogether, 42 areas that could contain undiscovered copper and zinc deposits of the VMS, porphyry copper or Outokumpu type were delineated in Finland. The areas are expected to contain approximately 60 undiscovered deposits, said the release.
Most of the undiscovered zinc resources in Finland are estimated to be located in VMS and Outokumpu-type deposits in central and eastern Finland, whereas most of the undiscovered copper
resources are estimated to be in porphyry-style deposits in central and southern Finland and in mafic-ultramafic intrusion-hosted nickel-copper-platinum group element deposits in northern Finland.
