A recent survey by the national broadcaster YLE has revealed that majority of Finns are in favour of a referendum to decide a possible decision on joining the military alliance NATO.

The survey found that 63 per cent of the respondents are in favour of the issue to be settled through a referendum, even if the president, the government and the majority in parliament hold unanimous decision in favour of NATO membership application.

The survey also revealed that 27 per cent of the respondents support a parliamentary decision, while 10 per cent said they did not know how the matter should be resolved.

Some ruling Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) lawmakers have suggested that a referendum would not be necessary, if the decision is backed by sufficient consensus.

The referendum was backed mostly by supporters of the oppositions Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) and Vasemmistoliito (Left Alliance).

The survey conducted by Taloustutkimus interviewed about a thousand people at the turn of the year. The margin of error was about +/- 2.5 per cent.
