The National Police Board has imposed a ban on the use of police uniforms in electoral advertising, election rallies and in other election-related contexts, reported the Finnish language daily Savon Sanomat.

The Police Board issued the guideline to the police of respective localities, since they decide on the use of police uniforms.

The police are free to become candidates in elections and can as well reveal their profession in public. However, they are not allowed to use any official symbols as candidates.

According to the police legislation, the police can use uniforms while on official duty, during official trips and while representing the police.

Currently, a police officer who is also a parliamentary candidate appears in the police television series “Poliisit” aired on Jim channel.

Eastern Finland Police boss Taisto Huokko said he had received feedback regarding the issue.

“The people in the series were, however, selected and the shooting was done before the candidacy became known,” said Huokko.
