Involvement of Finnish people in voluntary activities has seen a fall, although the nation was leading in the field just a few years back.

There is an argument that people are more involved in showing their self-images and busy with smart-phones and social media, which might have been the reason behind their reluctance to join charitable activities.

“Finland was a world leader in the field of voluntary works in 2010, when a research result showed that 36 per cent to 39 per cent of the adult people were involved in voluntary works within a span of one month,” said Anitta Raitanen of the Civil Arena Association.

Raitanen said the attitude of “leave no one behind” encourages people to join voluntarism.

Besides, in Finland, there is a strong tradition of union activity. The solidarity among the Finns has still been growing up and the fact is that Finns want to be helpful.

There is a lot of works in the field for volunteers. For example, Heikki Hursti runs a union which distributes aid packages on a weekly basis.

Hursti also hosted the Christmas party for less fortunate and it would not be possible without the volunteers’ help.
