Tue, 13 Jan, 2015 12:08:50 AM FTimes – STT Report, Jan 13 Tom of Finland stamps and postcards. File Photo – Lehtikuva. Tom of Finland, the homoerotic postal stamps which went on sale last year, will no longer lead to more actions, said Parliamentary Deputy Ombudsman Maija Sakslin.
Seven complaints against the stamps had reached the ombudsman’s office, claiming that the stamps featured sexually offensive images and that it was against the tobacco law.
Sakslin evaluated the release of the stamps in line with the constitution, the European Convention of Human Rights and in light of the Universal Postal Convention.
According to Sakslin, the constitutional provisions give protection to all kinds of artistic and other forms of expression.
In accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights, the protection of freedom of expression also covers information which is offensive, shocking or information which causes widespread disruption within the population.
According to the European Court of Human Rights, this is based on pluralism, farsightedness and tolerance – the absence of which cannot be said of a democratic society.
A large number of Tom of Finland stamps have also been sold abroad.
