Swedish police working in the sparsely populated region of Norrbotten will soon receive assistance from their Finnish colleagues.

Police are currently being trained to ensure that collaboration along the 400 km border between Sweden and Finland will become more effective. The collaboration could, for instance, include patrolling in shared cars.

"In the sparsely populated areas of eastern Norbotten and Pajala, the nearest back-up could be 180 km away. In the future, we'll be able to ask for enforcement from Kolari in Finland, which is just 30 km away," Swedish project leader Mikael Rova told Swedish Radio.

Currently, police forces face several limitations when it comes to working in each other's countries and the departments of justice in Sweden and Finland are working to push through the necessary legal changes.

A total of 150 police officers are affected by the collaborative project, which is expected to be set in motion by next fall.
