The Finnish Air Force on Wednesday received an official written invitation from the United States to participate in a joint Air Force training exercise scheduled to be held in April in Estonia.

The head of Defence Forces Communications, Mika Kalliomaa revealed that exchange of information with the US on the details of the exercise has been initiated.

Kalliomaa said that detailed planning on the part of the Finns will be started when a political decision on the Finns participation will be reached.

The invitation concerns military exercise on the Ämari Air Base in Estonia with the US’s 510th Fighter Squadron.

The invitation is a confirmation of a verbal invitation earlier made by US General  Frank Gorenc during his visit to the country in November last year.

The discussion on the participation of the country's Air Force began on Sunday when Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat reported that President Sauli Niinistö and Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja would oppose the joint exercise with the US in Estonia.
