Seventy-six percent of Finland’s population growth consisted of net immigration in 2014, according to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data.
 
In the year, the population grew by 23,020 persons or 1,690 persons fewer than in 2013.
 
The share of net immigration in the population growth was 17,540 persons, the data show.
 
Altogether 31,950 persons immigrated to Finland and 14,410 persons emigrated from Finland during the time.
 
The natural population increase, or excess of births to deaths, was 5,480 persons as per the statistics.
 
The preliminary population figure at the end of 2014 was 5,474,289.
 
The number of immigrants was the same as in 2013. The number of emigrants was, in turn, 520 higher than in the previous year. In all, 8,780 of the immigrants and 9,890 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens. 
 
In 2014, a total of 57,080 children were born, which was 1,060 fewer than in 2013, while the number of deaths was 51,600, which was 120 higher than one year earlier.
 
By region, the population grew in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Varsinais-Suomi, Ostrobothnia, Åland, Central Ostrobothnia and Central Finland.
 
In Pohjois-Savo, the population, however, remained almost unchanged.
