A total of 53 people were killed while using water transport in the year 2014, said Finnish Transport Safety Agency.

The figure of the fatalities is close to the long-term average. In coastal areas, the number of deaths was more as a result of accidents, while in the inland waters the number declined.

It was, however, exceptional that one fifth of all deaths of people riding on boats were over the age of 75.

Normally, the number of elderly who were perished in water transport accident has been one in ten.

During summer, less boaters died compared to the past, however the total accidents at the end of the year clouded the statistics.

In September-December last year, 20 boaters were perished compared to 10 deaths during the corresponding period in the previous year.
