Defence Minister Carl Haglund has given green light to modernisation of the Defence Forces infantry fighting vehicles.

The modernisation will be contracted to the Finnish company Conlog Oy.

The procurement includes upgrading and related maintenance of about a hundred battle tanks.

Millog Oy, a strategic partner of the Finnish Defence Forces, will be responsible for maintenance of the tanks.

The tanks will be equipped with new night vision devices and camouflage system.

The modernisation project will continue until 2009.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the total cost of the contract inclusive of VAT is over 35 million euros. The project will create approximately 50 man-years.

The maintenance is expected to safeguard the performance of the battle tanks until 2030s.

Finland acquired the battle tanks from the former Soviet Union in 1980 and at the turn of the 1990s.
