The Speaker’s Council should choose representatives from both genders in the next parliamentary term, said Chair of National Council of Women of Finland and MP Sirkka-Liisa Anttila.

According to Anttila, the issue is about values that promote equality. The current speaker of parliament and the first and second deputy speakers are all men.

Anttila described the situation as sending a completely wrong signal of gender equality model abroad.

The composition of the Speaker’s Council should respect the gender equality legislation, said Anttila.

According to Anttila, the parliamentary parties bear the responsibility of organising the new parliament.

Anttila has acted in the capacity of deputy speaker on three occasions.

The first woman speaker of parliament was Riitta Uosukainen who had been in the office from 1994 to 2003.
