Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces Jarmo Lindberg has called for a more fact-based defence policy debate during the election time.

Speaking on Wednesday in Jyväskylä, Lindberg said discussion on the defence alliance NATO during elections is necessary as long as it is based on facts and is analytic.

Lindberg believes that in any case NATO will be raised as a topic for discussion during the forthcoming spring elections.

“It would be good that there would be a NATO debate. Hopefully, it would be based on facts and not be an emotional controversial debate,” remarked Lindberg.

The Defence Forces chief believes there is enough information for an analytic debate on NATO.

Lindberg differed with the claim that there would not be enough information, saying there is full information on NATO available on the internet including a number of studies on the subject.

Similarly, Lindberg expects the issue of defence cooperation between Nordic countries would also be raised during the elections.

Lindberg said the development of defence cooperation between Finland and Sweden is based on strong public opinion from both countries.
