FTimes-STT-Xinhua Report, Feb 6

The President, Sauli Niinistö on Thursday said that Finland has no plan to provide Ukraine with arms support.

Speaking on an occasion in Espoo, Niinistö said that the issue has already been discussed in the committee of Foreign and Security Policy and the committee thinks that such assistance would lead to a vicious circle.

The President, however, said that Finland is providing financial support to Ukraine and the non-governmental organisations that are organising aid to the war-torn country.

Niinistö did not rule out a new round of sanction against Russia.

The president, however, did not mentioned, whether Finland will provide Ukraine with equipments such as, helmets, protective vests and night vision binoculars.

Earlier, on Tuesday Prime Minister Alexander Stubb has categorically dismissed the Estonian proposal of armed assistance to Ukraine.

The premier stressed that a military conflict should be avoided until the end.

Estonian president Toomas Hendrik Ilves is said to support armed assistance to Ukraine because without lethal assistance, Ukraine would not be able to repel the separatists.
