The government on Wednesday refuted the opposition’s allegation of neglecting the country’s education sector.

Speaking during the questions-answer hour in the parliament, Education Minister Krista Kiuru said the government was not closing down upper secondary school outlets, but instead was strengthening the network of upper secondary school organisers.

Municipalities, municipal consortium, registered organisations or foundations can still be granted licences to organise education.

According to Kiuru, savings are generated when funding is emphasised on the part of qualifications. In case the period of study is not shortened and the flow is increased the result is uncontrollable student number cuts and exclusion.

"I do not think anyone would wish for such kind of future for Finland," said Kiuru.

Parliamentarian Tuomo Puumala of the opposition Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party ) accused the present government of making the largest ever cuts in education sector than any other previous government.

"In addition to 1,700 million in cuts currently 260 million cut in upper secondary education and vocational schools is being addressed," said Puumala during the parliament question time.
According to Puumala, the government is no longer in a position to assess their implication on the future of education and regional vitality.
