Finland's population at the end of January was 5,475,450, according to Statistics Finland's preliminary data.
 
Finland's population increased by 1,160 persons, which is 170 persons less than in the preliminary data for January of the previous year.
 
The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad—the number of immigrants being 1,330 higher than that of emigrants.
 
There was no natural population growth, since deaths exceeded births by 170 persons.
 
A total of 2380 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1050 persons emigrated from Finland, according the preliminary statistics for January.
 
The number of immigrants was 120 lower and the number of emigrants 310 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 970 of the immigrants and 770 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
 
During January, 4630 children were born, which is 170 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2014.
 
The number of deaths was 4800, which is 180 higher than one year earlier.
 
The number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 14,900 during January, the data show.
